The Isabel Johnson shelter was opened by the YWCA in 1983 as a
temporary refuge for abused women & their children, until there was space at
Transition House. There was a lack of shelter space in the city at that time.
It was soon discovered there were many families in crisis needing a full range
of support services.
23 years later, they offer refuge, safety, support,
information, counseling, referral, advocacy & assistance with settling into new housing.
The shelter accommodates 10 clients with a maximum stay of six weeks.
The wish
list: tea towels, dish cloths, bath towels, face clothes, bedroom lamps, cleaning
supplies, personal hygiene kits for women, non-violent children's videos, baby supplies,
activity supplies, diapers, a computer, long distance phone cards, & small notebooks for
journaling. Larger items we need include, book shelves, new single mattresses,
new office chairs, & a front loading washing machine.
